Report: Mitch Trubisky, Buffalo Bills in talks for potential reunion

The Pittsburgh Steelers officially decided to move on from quarterback Mitch Trubisky in February. And he’s been allowed to sign with whichever team he chooses this offseason. According to Tim Graham, the Buffalo Bills were in talks with the former North Carolina star to see if he wants to join their team again.

Later on Wednesday evening, NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported that the Bills officially agreed to terms on Trubisky returning to Buffalo. The deal is officially complete. Pittsburgh released the former Tar Heel to find his next job before free agency began. He did just that.

In five games with the Steelers this season, Trubisky struggled, completing 62.6% of his passes for 632 yards, while tossing four touchdowns and five interceptions. He was eventually replaced by Mason Rudolph as the starting quarterback.

One of his best seasons came in 2018 with the Chicago Bears, when he completed 66.6% of his passes for 3,223 yards, while tossing in 24 touchdowns with 12 interceptions. A dynamic runner at times, Trubisky also ran for 421 yards and three touchdowns that year.

During his brief stint with the Buffalo Bills in 2021, the Ohio native played in six games, completing just six of eight passes for 43 yards, while tossing in no touchdowns and one interception.

He’s played on three different teams during his time in the National Football League (2017-2023). The dual-threat has spent time with the Chicago Bears, Buffalo Bills, and Pittsburgh Steelers. As a runner, he’s rushed 238 times for 1,173 yards in seven years. As a passer, he’s completed 64.1 percent of his passes for 12,536 yards, while tossing in 72 touchdowns with 48 interceptions. 

During his stay as North Carolina, Trubisky only started once season in Chapel Hill. He ended up starting all 13 games for UNC in 2016 where he finished the year with 4,762 yards — a number that he is still chasing in the NFL — and a whopping 41 touchdowns.

Coming out of high school, Trubisky was one of the top quarterback prospects in the country. He played his high school football at Mentor High School (Cleveland, Ohio), one of the more dominant programs in Ohio High School football history. In the 2013 cycle, he was rated as the No. 25 overall quarterback prospect in the country and a four-star recruit, according to the On3 Industry Rankings.
