Reporter shares Cowboys' main concern heading into NFL Draft

Apparently, the Dallas Cowboys believe an NFC East rival is targeting a player they love.

Per NFL Media's Jane Slater, the Cowboys are concerned the Philadelphia Eagles may take Texas Longhorns running back Jonathon Brooks with their second-round pick (No. 53 overall) on Friday.

Dallas has pick No. 56.

On Monday, ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter noted several teams believe the Cowboys are bullish on Brooks.

RB is one of the Cowboys' biggest needs. This offseason, former Pro Bowler Tony Pollard — who rushed for 1,005 yards in 17 games in 2023 — signed a three-year, $21.75M deal with the Tennessee Titans. Meanwhile, Dallas RBs Rico Dowdle and Deuce Vaughn combined for 401 rushing yards last season, meaning they're probably not viable replacements.

Dallas recently signed RB Royce Freeman to a one-year, $1.29M deal, but he's never surpassed 600 rushing yards in six seasons.
Per NFL Media's Ian Rapoport, the Cowboys and former Pro Bowler Ezekiel Elliott are considering a reunion and held a meeting on Wednesday. However, the 28-year-old is probably not an RB1 at this point in his career.

Taking Brooks could be a smart choice for the Cowboys. Even though he tore his ACL in November, he's expected to be ready for the start of training camp, via Schefter. In 11 games in 2023, he rushed for 1,139 yards and 10 TDs on 187 carries.

Slater pointed out the Cowboys could trade their first-rounder (No. 24) if two of the offensive linemen they like are off the board. She listed Duke's Graham Barton, Oklahoma's Tyler Guyton and Georgia's Amarius Mims as potential tragets.

The Cowboys could acquire another second-rounder and take Brooks if they move down. Otherwise, they should consider choosing another RB, perhaps Florida State's Trey Benson or Michigan's Blake Corum.
