San Francisco 49ers reportedly considering move for polarizing safety
Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports

The San Francisco 49ers could use some depth in their secondary, and they could be turning to a former All-Pro to fill that need.

According to Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times, the 49ers have been in contact with former Seattle Seahawks safety Jamal Adams, who was released by the Seahawks earlier this offseason.

Adams is coming off of an abysmal 2023 campaign in which he played nine games and logged 48 tackles and a couple of passes defended.

The 28-year-old, who played his collegiate football at LSU, was originally selected by the New York Jets with the sixth overall pick of the 2017 NFL Draft.

He spent the first three years of his career with the Jets and established himself as one of the best defensive backs in football, making a couple of trips to the Pro Bowl while also earning a First-Team All-Pro selection during his time in New York.

Adams broke out in his second season, racking up 115 tackles, 3.5 sacks, an interception, three forced fumbles, a fumble recovery and 12 passes defended. The following year, he rattled off 75 tackles, 6.5 sacks, a pick, a pair of forced fumbles, a fumble recovery, seven passes defended and two defensive touchdowns.

That ensuing offseason, the Jets traded Adams to the Seahawks, and his tenure in Seattle started out well, as he made the Pro Bowl in his debut campaign with the club.

Since then, however, Adams’ run in the Pacific Northwest became nothing short of an unmitigated disaster.

Over the last three seasons, Adams has played in a grand total of 22 games, both due to injuries and attitude issues that worth thin on the Seahawks’ organization.

Adams’ coverage skills have also disintegrated, which is why he may have to play some linebacker if he ends up on an NFL roster next season.

Given that the 49ers will be without linebacker Dre Greenlaw as he recovers from the torn Achilles he suffered in the Super Bowl, Adams would make some sense.
