Watch: Cowboys second-year WR makes epic catch in practice

Tolbert has impressed throughout training camp and the preseason. During a 28-23 loss to the Jaguars on Saturday, he caught two receptions for 29 yards and a TD.

Last season, the Cowboys hoped the 88th overall pick of the 2022 NFL Draft would add depth to their receiving corps after they traded Pro Bowl WR Amari Cooper to Cleveland. The South Alabama product struggled, however, only recording two catches for 12 yards in eight games. 

During the offseason, he used drawing, one of his favorite hobbies, to rebound from the underwhelming season. Per Saad Yousuf of The Athletic, he installed a whiteboard in his house to improve his understanding of the playbook. 

"I love art, and I like to draw," Tolbert told Yousuf. "Even in college, I would go up to our fieldhouse and draw on the dry-erase board, draw up the plays. Me being able to draw it up and see every spot on the picture it is a way that I learn."

Dallas offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer noted the learning method and gave Tolbert a notebook, so he could keep sketching and visualizing plays. Clearly, it's working. 

"I love it," Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy said of Tolbert's progress in a Monday news conference.

Although Dallas already has a No. 1 wideout in Pro Bowler CeeDee Lamb and acquired Brandin Cooks this offseason, it could still use another talented WR after it finished 14th in passing yards last season. 

Perhaps Tolbert will keep making outstanding catches in practice and break out this season.
