Injured Scott Mayfield Rejoins Islanders At Morning Skate
John Jones-USA TODAY Sports

After a three-day break for Christmas, the New York Islanders were back on the ice, and so too was defenseman Scott Mayfield.

Mayfield has been on injured reserve with an upper-body injury he suffered in the Islanders’ win over the Toronto Maple Leafs. He’s missed the last seven games.

In total, the veteran defenseman has 13 games this season.

Although Mayfield was back at practice this morning, he remains on injured reserve.

Mayfield is one of three Islanders defensemen currently out with injury. Ryan Pulock was placed on injured reserve with a lower-body injury on Dec. 7, and Adam Pelech has been on long-term injured reserve since Nov. 24.

In their places, the Islanders have relied heavily on newcomers Mike Reilly and Robert Bortuzzo to fortify their backend, as well as the progression of Noah Dobson and Alexander Romanov.

Mayfield worked on a pairing with Grant Hutton at morning skate. It does not appear he will be activated off injured reserve in time for the Islanders’ game against the Pittsburgh Penguins tonight at 7:30 p.m. EST at UBS Arena.
