Islanders' win breaks New York-New Jersey sports' nearly 30-year drought

It's a good time to be a sports fan in the Big Apple and the Garden State.

With the New York Islanders' 4-2 win over the Montreal Canadiens on Wednesday night, the team not only qualified for the postseason, but they joined New York and New Jersey's other two NHL teams -- the Rangers and New Jersey Devils -- in the field. The trio of teams on the ice are also joined by the pair of NBA squads (Brooklyn Nets and New York Knicks) that call the City That Never Sleeps in the playoffs.

It's the first time since 1994 that all five teams have made the postseason. Back then, the Nets weren't in Brooklyn, but they were located in New Jersey, so they still counted for the rarity.

As noted by WFAN's Ryan Chichester, the Devils and Rangers could square off in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs if the former doesn't pass the Carolina Hurricanes for first place in the Metropolitan Division on Thursday in the regular season finale. New Jersey will play the Washington Capitals, while Carolina takes on the Florida Panthers.

It may be difficult for any of the Devils, Islanders or Rangers to make their way through the Eastern Conference playoffs this year though, as the Boston Bruins have had an historic season and are far and away the best team in the NHL with 133 points.

Both the Knicks and Nets are a long shot to make it far in the NBA playoffs as well, with the top-seeded Milwaukee Bucks and second-seeded Boston Celtics the heavy favorites to come out of the East. No. 5 New York will face the fourth-seeded Cleveland Cavaliers in the first round, while No. 6 Brooklyn will battle with the third-seeded Philadelphia 76ers.

On the west coast, the four NBA teams in California made history earlier this week when the Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Minnesota Timberwolves in the play-in tournament. This meant that the entire quartet of the Lakers, Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Clippers and Sacramento Kings would be in this year's playoffs.

Unfortunately for hockey fans in California, only one of their three teams made the postseason, as the Los Angeles Kings are in, but the San Jose Sharks and Anaheim Ducks finished well outside of the picture.
