Landeskog Gives Update On His Recovery, Challenges He’ll Face
Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

Gabriel Landeskog was in Buffalo today to watch his Colorado Avalanche take on the Sabres.

His team didn’t really give him much to cheer about, but it’s nice to know he’s around the team a little bit.

Landeskog is rehabbing his injury in Toronto, where his wife is from, so it was a quick drive down to Buffalo for him. While in town, he took time to speak to a media outlet (Viaplay) in Sweden about his recovery from knee surgery back in May. This game was televised in Sweden today, so they had Landeskog come on and introduce the broadcast.

Luckily for me, I know a Swede (Thanks, Robin) who was nice enough to translate what Landeskog had to say.

Here’s what the Avalanche Captain had to say.

“Hello, Gabriel Landeskog here, from a hotel room in Buffalo. I just wanted to bring a quick update on how it’s going for me with my journey to recovery. I had a knee surgery in May. Cartilage transplantation, and it’s been six months since, it feels good. I am fully active in the gym. I am doing less and less rehab and more and more physical exercise. I look forward to hitting the ice soon, but it’s a long road ahead… I’ve missed a lot time, and even before this surgery, I had created some bad habits when it came to my skating technique that I need to shake off and new techniques to be learned, and learn to use the correct muscles in the correct way. So it’s a long way to go, but I look forward to the journey, and eventually I will be able to share more of what I have been going through.”

So there you go, some good news coupled with some interesting news. Landeskog seems to be doing quite well in his recovery, and is past the “rehab” part of it all, but the comments about his skating technique are very intriguing. He’s likely referring to playing through the knee injury in the playoffs back in 2022, and compensating for the issues.

It’s a good reminder that while Landeskog might hit the ice in the near future, he’s got a long way to go before he returns to the Avalanche lineup. The team remains cautiously optimistic that he can return for the playoffs, but I think it would be smart for fans to temper their expectations. By the time the playoffs roll around, he’ll have missed 22 months of NHL action. A return during the most intense part of the season seems like it could be difficult, and the Avalanche need to think long-term here.

Either way, it’s great to hear from the Captain, as I know us in the media miss him. He’s always great to speak to, and doesn’t sugarcoat anything.

It’s also nice to know his hair is still perfect.

Like everyone else, I look forward to seeing him playing NHL hockey again soon.
