Penguins' Top Defenseman Named Trade Target

PITTSBURGH – The NHL trade deadline is just over a week away, and a lot of focus is being put on the Pittsburgh Penguins. Sitting seven points out of a playoff spot, the Penguins hold multiple players that could be substantial trade targets for teams across the league.

Jake Guentzel and Reilly Smith are a couple of forwards likely to be dealt before the deadline, while multiple goalies have gained a ton of attention. A new name, previously thought to be near untouchable, has found himself among the conversations.

According to David Pagnotta of the Fifth Period, Marcus Pettersson has started to pop on some radars.

“Some of the names making the rounds,” Pagnotta said. “We know of Reilly Smith but also Rickard Rakell, as I mentioned last week. Marcus Pettersson on the blue line with another year left on his contract.”

Pagnotta didn’t provide much detail in the Pettersson report, but that name could fetch the Penguins a considerable return. Aside from Guentzel, he may be the second biggest piece the Penguins have available.

Pettersson has had a phenomenal year defensively, earning his way to being one of the untouchables at this year’s trade deadline. No matter who he’s shared a blue line with, he’s gotten the best out of them.

In 55 games, Pettersson has three goals and 21 assists for a near career-high 24 points. He’s also leading the team with a plus-23 rating.

The Penguins should consider retaining Pettersson for next season; that’s just how good he’s been. Their playoff hopes aren’t completely dead yet, and unless a team can blow them away with an offer, Pettersson should stick around a bit longer.
