The Calgary Flames have added several new faces to their staff

Coming out of the August long weekend, the Calgary Flames updated their website to reflect some changes in their hockey operations department over the past few months. There are some new faces with new jobs, and some familiar faces whose titles or duties have changed a bit.

Here’s a quick rundown of some new faces and new job titles.

New faces since the end of the regular season

Dave Nonis – senior vice-president of hockey operations, assistant general manager

Announced on May 23: Nonis is an experienced hockey executive who has served as general manager in several markets. Most recently, he served as assistant general manager in Anaheim.

Jarome Iginla – special advisor to the general manager

Announced on June 15: Iginla is the Flames’ all-time leader in games played, goals and points, a Hockey Hall of Fame inductee, and the 16th-leading goal-scorer in NHL history. Iginla is concurrently coaching at the RINK Hockey Academy in Kelowna for the 2023-24 season, in addition to his duties with the Flames.

Michael Stone – development coach

Announced on July 5: Stone played 12 seasons in the NHL, including parts of seven seasons with the Flames. He retired and joined the Flames as part of their development staff, working with their defensive prospect.

Zach McClean – development strength coach

Not previously announced, McClean has worked as a strength and conditioning coach and sports scientist. (This appears to be a new role within the development team.)

Hendrix Hanes – developer & data scientist

Announced on June 8: Hanes worked with the Ontario Hockey League’s Kitchener Rangers as a video coach and developer for their analytics team. Per the Rangers’ release, he’ll “be tasked with researching and developing analytics-based projects and platforms with the purpose of assisting the Flames’ hockey operations development.”

Marc Savard – assistant coach

Announced on June 23: Savard was previously head coach with the OHL’s Windsor Spitfires and an assistant coach with the St. Louis Blues prior to that. A long-time NHLer whose career was cut short due to concussion issues, Savard will manage the Flames’ forwards and power play units.

Dan Lambert – assistant coach

Announced on June 23: Lambert was previously assistant coach with the Nashville Predators. He’s an experienced coach who also had a lengthy playing career. He’ll manage the Flames’ defence and penalty killing units.

Andrew Doty – video coordinator

Not previously announced, Doty spent the past three seasons as video coach with the American Hockey League’s Henderson Silver Knights. Prior to that, he spent five seasons as video coach with the Western Hockey League’s Lethbridge Hurricanes.

Caylin Relkoff – assistant strength coach

Not previously announced, Relkoff spent the past two seasons as strength and conditioning coach with the AHL’s San Diego Gulls. He also played in the NCAA at the Division III level, serving as a goaltender for Morrisville State College for four seasons.

Kerry Huffman – pro scout

Not previously announced, Huffman was most recently director of pro scouting for the Pittsburgh Penguins before departing the organization at the beginning of June after Kyle Dubas’ arrival. Prior to joining the Penguins as a scout in 2021 he spent several seasons as an assistant coach with the Philadelphia Flyers’ AHL affiliate.

Brad Richardson – pro scout

Not previously announced, Richardson recently concluded a playing career that included 17 seasons in the NHL. He split his final season, 2021-22, between the Flames and Vancouver Canucks.

Trent Cull – head coach, Calgary Wranglers

Announced on July 17: Cull was most recently an assistant coach with Vancouver, but departed the organization alongside Bruce Boudreau midway through the 2022-23 season. He’s returning to the AHL, where he’s coached quite a bit during his career.

New job titles since the end of the regular season

Don Maloney – president of hockey operations

Previously senior vice-president of hockey operations, Maloney was promoted right after the season and led the hiring process for the next GM.

Craig Conroy – general manager

Previously an assistant general manager, Conroy was promoted to GM at the end of Maloney’s hiring process.

Brad Pascall – vice-president of hockey operations, assistant general manager

Previously an assistant general manager, Pascall was a finalist in the GM search and received a promotion. He runs the Flames’ development apparatus, including their AHL affiliate, the Wranglers.

Chris Snow, vice-president of data/analytics, assistant general manager

Previously an assistant general manager, Snow received a promotion following the GM search process. As head of the Flames’ data apparatus, he and his department touch on essentially everything that hockey operations does.

Ryan Huska, head coach

Previously an assistant coach whose role focused on managing the defence and penalty killing groups, Huska was promoted to head coach earlier this off-season.

Rick Davis, head strength coach

Previously the club’s assistant strength coach, he was promoted to the head role this off-season.

Steve Pleau, head pro scout

A longtime pro scout in the organization dating back to 2010, Pleau is now head pro scout.

Billy Powers, pro scout

Previously an amateur scout for the club since 2017, Powers is now a pro scout.
