Former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has been tipped to fight Jamie Vardy.

The suggestion comes after Rooney had been approached by Misfits, the promotion co-founded by famous YouTuber KSI, to discuss United’s record goalscorer potentially fighting at one of their events.

Rooney confirmed the approach last month but insisted he remains fully focused on getting back into football management after he was sacked as Birmingham City manager in January.

“They’ve been in touch and asked the question but I think at the minute I want to focus on getting back into management, not boxing,” the former England international said, as per ESPN. “There’s been a few [offers] and obviously Misfits have been in and that’s been all over the news. But listen I want to focus on getting back into management, that’s my focus.”

Former world champion Amir Khan believes Leicester City striker Vardy would be a great opponent for Rooney if he ever did step into the right. There has been a bit of drama between the two families since the Wagatha Christie scandal that involved their wives Coleen and Rebekah.

“Jamie Vardy is the right fight for Wayne Rooney, that’s a very good even fight,” Khan told Gambling Zone.

“They’ve got the spat their wives have had, what a fight that would make, it would sell well.

“They’re both around the same level as well. They’re both novices. I’d back Wayne though because Wayne’s more streetwise, he’s more solid.

“You don’t want to put him in the ring with someone that could hurt him, or outbox and make him look stupid, it should just be someone for a bit of fun as some like Wayne Rooney could get really hurt.

“He’s not really a boxer, so if he got in the deep end too quickly, it could knock his confidence and he could get hurt. Khan also said he would be willing to help train Rooney, who is a big fan of the sport and was a member of an amateur boxing club growing up.

“I’d love to train and help Wayne Rooney, sportsmen have a lot of respect for one another, because they’ve been there and done it, so they’d listen to you more than a normal trainer,” he added. “When you train with another athlete it’s going to push you and you’re going to train hard.”
