With Domenico Berardi out injured, Tommaso Baldanzi hopes to join Italy for this summer’s European Championship, but his position at Roma may cause Luciano Spalletti to look elsewhere.

The Sassuolo talisman has to undergo an operation to repair his Achilles tendon after suffering a brutally unlucky injury in the 58th minute of Sassuolo’s 1-0 defeat to Hellas Verona on the weekend, an issue that rules him out of Euro 2024 this summer.

Spalletti had expected to include Berardi in his Italy squad but will now have to find another option on the right wing. Some have suggested that Baldanzi be given a chance, considering his strong work at Empoli, but things may not turn out that way for the talented 20-year-old.

Calciomercato.com details how Baldanzi is at risk of missing out on a spot in the Italy squad at Euro 2024 due to his lack of playing time following the transfer to Roma in January.

Since making the move, the 20-year-old forward has only seen 146 minutes of action across six games, starting just once. Considering his competition in the Giallorossi squad, it’s hard to imagine him becoming a first team regular before the end of this season.

Baldanzi’s move to Roma and subsequent reduction in minutes could therefore seriously hamper his chances of receiving a call-up to Spalletti’s Italy squad.
