Atletico Madrid beat Inter Milan in a penalty shootout on Wednesday to progress to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League.

Jan Oblak saved two spot-kicks as Atletico prevailed 3-2 on penalties at Metropolitano Stadium.

Memphis Depay had earlier scored an 87th-minute goal to secure a 2-1 win for Atletico, tying this round of 16 contest at 2-2 on aggregate.

Atletico will be joined in Friday's quarter-final draw by Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid, Manchester City, Arsenal, Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund.

Inter went into Wednesday's game with a slender lead after winning the first leg 1-0 in Italy last month.

A slick team move finished off by Federico Dimarco then saw Inter go 2-0 up on aggregate 33 minutes into the second leg.

Inter have lost just once in 28 Serie A matches this season, so Atletico looked in real trouble.

But some uncharacteristically untidy Inter defending enabled Antoine Griezmann to hit back just 135 seconds after Dimarco's opener.

Depay later completed the turnaround with a sharp finish to put Atletico 2-1 up on the night.

After 30 minutes of goalless extra time, a Champions League penalty shootout was required for the second time in 24 hours.

Hakan Calhanoglu and Depay both found the net but the next three penalties were all saved.

Atletico keeper Oblak kept out efforts from Alexis Sanchez and Davy Klaassen, with Inter's Yann Sommer thwarting Saul Niguez.

Rodrigo Riquelme, Francesco Acerbi and Angel Correa then converted their spot-kicks.

That left Lautaro Martinez needing to score to keep Inter in the contest but he missed the target.
