Today, football was hit with the news that Brazil’s legendary striker Pele was sent to hospital as he battles a long-term health issue.

The three-time World Cup winner has received messages of support from across the footballing world from fans, players, and managers alike.

During the BBC’s coverage of Netherlands vs USA this afternoon, studio guest Jurgen Klinsmann spoke glowingly about the Brazilian, saying how much of an inspiration he is to everyone involved with the sport.

For me, he is the greatest ever. He won three World Cups and put Brazil on the map to make it this nation that we admire.

He’s the face of Brazilian football and we hope he gets better as quickly as possible.”

A touching tribute as everyone wishes Pele well in his recovery, with his countrymen taking on South Korea in the Round of 16 tomorrow evening.
