Will Ospreay risked his future with viral Triple H promo

When Will Ospreay was a free agent, he reportedly had offers from every major wrestling company. He chose to join AEW. Reporting at the time stated that the lighter schedule and ability to commute to and from the United Kingdom were significant factors in his signing with Tony Khan's company.

So, when Paul "Triple H" Levesque discussed wrestlers wanting lighter schedules not fitting with WWE, it would appear Ospreay took that personally.

"When I see people trying to make it, and they pick the job where they go, 'Well I work less and the schedule's lighter,' okay I'm glad I didn't get you," Triple H said (h/t to Fightful for the transcription). "Because if you're not in it for the grind in that point in your career, you have no business being here."

On Wednesday, Ospreay cut a promo for AEW, where he took aim at WWE and took a subtle shot at Triple H in the process.

"I'm delivering some of the best professional wrestling matches this world has ever seen, bruv," Ospreay said. "Normally, I wouldn't rise to this type of bait, right? But seeing how the guy who said it is only in the position he's in because he was grinding the boss' daughter, you are in no position to tell me what the grind is all about, my friend because you have no idea what I fight for. So let this be a painful little jab back and a gentle reminder."

Firing a shot back at Triple H may have felt nice, but it was ill-advised. Right now, Ospreay is contracted to AEW. But what happens when free agency looms? Or if AEW begins to slide and Khan closes the doors?

Ospreay is a budding star; there's no doubt about it. There may come a day when he wants to test the waters of WWE and have some fresh matches and storylines. Yet, this promo could potentially close that door.

Although Ospreay is still early in his career, he's been around long enough to avoid mistakes like the one he potentially made on Wednesday. If he avoids any more provocative promos, this may be nothing more than water under the bridge by the time his current contract is up.

Picking a fight with the company that could one day be your best option for prolonging your career is a brave choice. Especially when Triple H's comments weren't directly aimed at any specific wrestler or group of wrestlers.

Still, Ospreay made his decision and went ahead with his promo. Time will tell if that will be a sticking point in his career in the years to come.
